Sensitivity of Depth-Integrated Satellite Lidar to Subaqueous Scattering

چکیده
A method is presented for estimating subaqueous integrated backscatter using near-nadir viewing satellite lidar. The algorithm takes into account specular reflection of laser light, laser scattering by wind-generated foam as well as sun glint and solar scattering from foam. The formulation is insensitive to the estimate of wind speed but sensitive to the estimate of transmittance used in the atmospheric correction. As a case study, CALIOP data over Tampa Bay were compared to MODIS 645 nm remote sensing reflectance, which previously has been shown to be nearly linearly related to turbidity. The results indicate good correlation on nearly all CALIOP cloud-free dates during the period 2006 through 2007, particularly those with relatively high atmospheric transmittance. The correlation decreases when data are composited over all dates but is still statistically significant, a possible indication of variability in the biogeochemical composition in the water. Overall, the favorable results show promise for the application of satellite lidar integrated backscatter in providing information about subsurface backscatter properties, which can be extracted using appropriate models.

Subsurface Ocean Signals from an Orbiting Polarization Lidar
Detection of subsurface returns from the Cloud-Aerosol Lidar with Orthogonal Polarization (CALIOP) on the Cloud-Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observation (CALIPSO) satellite were demonstrated. Despite the coarse range resolution of this aerosol lidar, evidence of subsurface scattering was observed as a delay and broadening of the cross-polarized signal relative to the co-polar...
متن کاملA Comparison among Four Different Retrieval Methods for Ice-Cloud Properties Using Data from CloudSat, CALIPSO, and MODIS
The A-Train constellation of satellites provides a new capability to measure vertical cloud profiles that leads to more detailed information on ice-cloud microphysical properties than has been possible up to now. A variational radar–lidar ice-cloud retrieval algorithm (VarCloud) takes advantage of the complementary nature of the CloudSat radar and Cloud–Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Sat...
متن کاملExtraordinary dust event over Beijing, China, during April 2006: Lidar, Sun photometric, satellite observations and model validation
[1] An extraordinary dust event over Beijing (April 2006) was followed by a synergy of lidar, Sun photometric and satellite measurements. Extreme aerosol optical depth (AOD) values (1–4) were measured by AERONET and MODIS over Beijing. The size distribution of the particles remained close to 2.5 mm and the single scattering albedo was around 0.92 ± 0.5 (440 nm). Coarse particles contributed to ...
متن کاملA versatile instrument with an optical parametric oscillator transmitter tunable from 1.5 to 3.1 μm for aerosol lidar and DIAL
Lidar is a valuable tool for atmospheric monitoring, allowing range-resolved profile measurements of a variety of quantities including aerosols, wind, pollutants and greenhouse gases. We report here the development of a versatile fielddeployable instrument for monitoring the lower troposphere. This region includes the effects of surface–atmosphere interactions and is an area where the resolutio...

Possessing accurate, spatial and current data on the water levels and the depths are necessary for anticipation and better management of coastal and continental waters. Among the remote sensing techniques to monitor the water bathymetry and altimetry, the LIDAR appears as an adapted and promising technique, already proven on airborne platforms, because of its potential accuracy, spatial resolut...
